But the disarmingly down to earth 43-year old – who admits he was not the obvious choice to become chief executive of Hargreaves Lansdown – has been entrusted with more than £55billion of people’s investments and pensions.

So what advice would he give savers worried about the impact of the turmoil in China on their pensions and investments?
‘My advice is to cover your ears, ignore the short-term noise and see this as an opportunity to start to top up rather than to sell down,’ says Gorham.
