Emir: Qatar aims to double trade volume with US

Doha: Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has said that there are more than 650 US companies operating in Qatar and the volume of trade cooperation between the State of Qatar and the United States reached $125bn, and that the plan aims to double these figures in the near future.

H H the Emir pointed out that Qatar is the fastest growing economy in the Middle East region and expressed the hope to work hand in hand with the US.

H H the Emir was delivering a speech on Tuesday evening at the reception held by the US-Qatar Business Council and the Chamber of Commerce of the US, at the Chamber’s headquarters, on the occasion of His Highness’ visit to Washington, DC.

US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross,  US Treasury Secretary Steven Terner Mnuchin, President and Board Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce of the US Tom J Donohue, President of the US-Qatar Business Council Ambassador Anne Patterson, and Minister of Economy and Commerce H E Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani  gave speeches that highlighted the strong Qatari-US relations and the joint cooperation in the fields of economy, trade and investment as well as the volume of trade exchange between the two countries and promising future opportunities in these areas for the benefit of both countries.

They also noted the strong Qatari economy and the volume of the rapid growth despite the siege, referring  to the success of Qatari projects, which benefit the two sides and the common interest. The reception was attended by a number of  Ministers, a number of current and former members of Congress and a number of Ambassadors, as well as prominent politicians, businessmen and the economy of the US.

On the Qatari side, it  was attended by members of the official delegation accompanying H H the Emir and a number of businessmen. H H the Emir and the audience exchanged views on ways to enhance cooperation between the State of Qatar and the US, especially in Washington, DC, in various political, economic, trade and investment fields.

Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani yesterday met US Senate Republican Majority Leader, Senator Mitch McConnell, at the Congress headquarters in Washington, DC. They reviewed friendship and cooperation ties between the two countries and the areas of developing them. It also touched on the latest regional and international developments.

A number of Their Excellencies members of the official accompanying delegation attended the meeting.

H H the Emir met on Tuesday with US Secretary of the Treasury, Steven Mnuchin, at H H the Emir’s residence in Washington. The meeting reviewed aspects of boosting the strategic cooperation between Qatar and the US in the different fields, especially in the areas of economy and investment. The meeting also touched on the efforts of both countries in fighting terrorism and combating its financing, in addition to discussing the latest regional and international developments.

H H the Emir also met with US Secretary of Homeland Security, Kirstjen Nielsen. The Secretary of Homeland Security expressed her thanks and appreciation to H H the Emir for the cooperation of the State of Qatar in the exchange of security expertise and information as well as joint contribution to enhance regional security.

The meeting also reviewed the relations in the field of security, especially cybersecurity, besides the joint efforts in the fight against terrorism and ways to develop joint cooperation.

H H the Emir also met US Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur Ross, and the accompanying delegation. They reviewed trade and investment relations between the two friendly countries and prospects for developing them.

H H the Emir met the US Acting Secretary of State, John J Sullivan, at his residence in Washington, DC. The meeting reviewed the diplomatic and strategic cooperation and ways to deepen it, in addition to a number of issues. H H the Emir met with Chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil, Darren Woods. They reviewed cooperation relations and means of developing them, besides the latest developments in the field of energy.

H H the Emir met with President and CEO of the US Chamber of Commerce Thomas Donohue, Vice President for Middle East Affairs Khush Choksy, and President of the US-Qatar Business Council Ambassador Anne Patterson, on the occasion of the reception hosted by the US-Qatar Business Council and the US Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber’s headquarters in Washington, DC on Tuesday evening.

Discussions during the meeting dealt with a number of topics of mutual interest, particularly with regard to the economic, commercial and investment aspects and means of enhancing them.
