DECLAN KEARNEY, former design director at Alexander Wang, has been named the first dedicated creative director of Maiyet, the luxury artisanal brand launched by Paul Van Zyl in 2010.

“It’s a response to the growth and a way to expand our reach. We are at a crucial juncture,” Van Zyl, a human rights lawyer and former executive secretary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa, told the New York Times.

The appointment aims to align the label’s ethical philosophies with an equally strong and compatible fashion point of view. Ready-to-wear, accessories, advertising campaigns and all brand imagery will now all become Kearney’s responsibilities as the Maiyet name grows – with a denim line, T-shirts and an increased focus on bags also planned.

“We wanted someone with major brand experience, technical abilities, especially when it comes to tailoring; a sense of print and pattern; and someone who shared our values and saw the creative possibilities working with artisans,” continued Van Zyl.
