Here’s the Luxury yacht where Olympic leaders are staying

While this year’s Olympic athletes stay in “uninhabitable” apartments, Olympics bigwigs will be living large on a luxury yacht.

It’s official: The Norwegian Getaway is taking a 40-day break from its regular cruising schedule in the Caribbean to head to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Once there, the 4,000-passenger ship will serve as a floating hotel for the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee.

Cruise ships have become a regular feature of recent summer Olympic games, as host venues seek to augment the number of hotel rooms in their cities. The Getaway will be berthed at the Pier Maua in Rio Aug. 4-22 to provide supplemental housing for corporate sponsors, members of the International Olympic Federation, the National Organizing Committees, the Rio Host Committee and assorted guests.

It has been well-known in cruise circles that the Getaway had been chartered for the Olympics, but both Norwegian Cruise Line and the committee had been tight-lipped about details. An announcement Thursday from Landry & Kling, a Miami travel agency that specializes in large cruise groups, was the first official confirmation.

Norwegian will lose out on the revenue from six summer cruises, but pick up the charter income plus exposure for the brand to a group of top international influencers.

For Landry & Kling, a decades-old firm, the brokerage deal represents the largest charter in the company’s history. It began laying plans in 2007.

This isn’t the first time the Norwegian Getaway has been chartered for a high-profile sports event. Even before it officially entered service for Norwegian in 2014, Getaway served as the dockside “Bud Light Hotel” at Super Bowl XLVIII festivities in the New York City area.
