Qatar has achieved remarkable success in its infrastructure projects, which played a big role in enhancing the country’s economic growth, HE the Minister of Municipality and Environment Engineer Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki al-Subaie said yesterday.
Speaking during the opening session of the World Congress of Engineering and Technology (WCET), organised by Qatar University in co-operation with the Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’, under the patronage of HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz al-Thani, HE al-Subaie said that the country carried out projects such as Hamad International Airport, Doha Metro, Hamad Port, in addition to building roads among other major infrastructure projects.
HE al-Subaie, who is also the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Qatar Rail, said that the company succeeded in implementing the first phase of the Doha Metro, which consists of three lines and 37 main stations, and during the construction phase managed to overcome many of the challenges by using advanced technology.
He noted that the tunnels were built using 21 tunnel boring machines that dug a total of 110km for 3 years.
He added that the project was implemented ahead of schedule, in addition to reducing costs and without affecting the quality, so that the Doha Metro forms a backbone of the public transportation system in the country.
He pointed out that the Ministry of Municipality and Environment established a partnership with the Qatar Transportation Centre to reduce the environmental impact of the Metro and increase their efficiency by improving safety and reducing fuel consumption.
On smart services and cities, he said that the new smart applications are now used for the process of collecting garbage, and noted that the Internet will play a big role in protecting the environment and limiting Carbon emissions in the future.
For her part, HE the Chairperson of the Board the Qatar Satellite Company Es’hailSat Dr Hessa al-Jaber discussed examples of healthcare apps.
Meanwhile, Qatar University’s President Dr Hassan Rashid al-Derham said that WCET provides a platform for exchanging technical information, disseminating high-quality research results, and presenting new policies and scientific progress in the fields of informatics, planning, infrastructure, construction and reconstruction.
He explained that WCET seeks to document the successes witnessed by Qatar in the field of infrastructure and construction and exchange experiences and best practices related to the building and construction industry and facility management.
On the IEEE International Conference on Informatics, IoT, and Enabling Technologies (ICIoT20), al-Derham pointed out that this conference will focus on recent developments in various aspects of informatics, artificial intelligence, IoT applications, smart services, computer vision, and documenting the best solutions that Qatar pursues in the field of informatics generally.
The International Conference of IEEE will discuss 113 research papers, presented by researchers from 37 countries, while 130 research papers will be presented at the International Conference on Infrastructure and Development in which researchers from 16 countries participate, he added.
