Focused on addressing the healthcare needs of the growing population in the country, Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) newest emergency facility, the Trauma and Emergency Center has begun offering a limited number of services from 7 am this morning.

The move comes under the first phase of a staged opening for the new facility, with the majority of services opening over the summer and early autumn this year.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani paid an inspection visit to the new emergency building accompanied by Minister of Public Health HE Dr Hanan Mohammed Al Kuwari, who mentioned that upon completion, the center will increase the size of the current emergency department by more than four times.

Patients arriving at the new center will be triaged, with the former Emergency Department staying open until the new center is fully operational.

One of the largest in the region, the completion of the new center will lead to a significant expansion of trauma and emergency services in Qatar, ranging from trauma, urgent and critical care, to short stay and ‘See and Treat’ walk-in services.

The center’s first floor will be dedicated to ambulance arrivals and critical care patients. It will also house Qatar’s major trauma center.

The second floor will be dedicated to urgent care patients, while the third floor will be for short stay patients who require a period of monitoring before being discharged.

The new facility will also offer patients access to modern healthcare technology including three CT scans, MRI, X-ray and ultrasound machines as well as an ultra-modern decompression chamber that will provide oxygen therapy for a range of medical conditions.

Dr Yousef Al Maslamani, Medical Director at HGH, commented, “This is a really important milestone on our journey to transforming trauma and emergency care in Qatar. We are excited to be able to welcome our first patients and while there is still some way to go before the facility is fully operational, walk-in patients will be able to experience the new center at first hand and we are very confident this is going to improve the experience our patients have.”

Additionally, three other floors are planned for the new center.

Until the whole building is operational, patients in need of immediate or urgent clinical intervention – and patients arriving by ambulance – will be transferred and treated in the former Emergency Department. The rest of the new facility opens later this year.

The new center will be connected with HGH’s new operation theatre and the HGH Trauma Intensive Care Unit for the quick transfer of patients.
