DOHA: The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC), launched “Qatar Farms” initiative at two more major commercial outlets — Carrefour Villaggio Mall and Al Meera at Hyatt Plaza Mall, yesterday.
The new initiative aims at promoting local agricultural products by providing marketing platforms, said a release. Under the initiative, fresh premium vegetable from local farms will be showcased at the participating outlets.
The move will help farmers get better prices for their products and make local agricultural products further competitive to attract the consumers. The initiative aims at promoting local products by marketing the products of Qatari farms at major outlets, said Yusuf Khalid Al Khulaifi, Director of Agriculture Affairs at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment. He said that the programme of marketing local products began in 2012 by opening winter markets to showcase and sell local agricultural products adding that the initiative for marketing premium vegetable at major outlet was launched last year.
“Now we have started new initiative “Qatar Farms” to make available premium vegetables from local farms at reasonable prices at four major outlets- Lulu Hypermarkets, Family Food Center (FFC),
Carrefour Villaggio Mall and Al Meera at Hyatt Plaza Mall,” said Al Khulaifi.
“The initiative provides platforms to market fresh vegetables from Qatari farms at the participating outlets in retail,” said Al Khulaifi adding that local products are being displayed prominently with premium quality at special prices.
He said that a total of 100 farms are participating to the initiative and the local farms can offer their all types of agricultural products but the quality should be premium.
Any local farm could participate to the initiative if they interested in to do so, he added. Laurent Hausknecht, Country Head for Carrefour Qatar said that Carrefour is committed to work with local suppliers to provide opportunity to our customers to buy local products.
“We are happy in cooperating with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment and Ministry of Economy and Commerce to launch this initiative that provides us opportunity in contributing in nation’s economy and supporting our community by serving consumers on daily basis,” said Hausknecht.
