Explosion rocks Bangkok, multiple casualties

Thailand’s national police chief says the blast – in a busy shopping district – was caused by a bomb. The death toll continues to rise with reports that more than twenty people were injured including foreigners.

A motorcycle bomb exploded in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, on Monday evening local time, the deputy national police chief confirmed.

A police and rescue worker at the scene said 12 people were killed in the blast, which happened at a major intersection in the city. Meanwhile, Nation TV reported five deaths and 20 others wounded. Officials said the injured included some foreigners.

Reports said the bomb went off in front of the Erawan shrine in the Chidlom district, a shopping area popular with tourists. Witnesses described seeing body parts scattered across the street.
