South African troops to help police stem immigrant attacks

South Africa is to send troops to areas where police are spread too thin trying to curb the deadly attacks against immigrants, the country’s defense minister says.

Johannesburg (CNN) – South Africa will deploy an undisclosed number of troops to areas where police are spread too thin trying to curb deadly attacks against immigrants, the country’s defense minister said Tuesday.

Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula made the announcement after visiting Johannesburg’s Alexandra Township, one area where mobs have attacked immigrants from other African nations and looted their shops — ostensibly based on the belief that foreigners are taking South Africans’ jobs.
