The launch of the seventh edition of the Qatar e-Nature Schools Contest was announced yesterday. The seventh edition of the annual event is organised by Sasol in co-operation with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) and the Friends of the Environment Centre (FEC).
Qatar’s ecosystems have been added to the Qatar e-Nature mobile app and website www.enature.qa that consists of coastal marine and terrestrial environments. The addition is a result of comprehensive research by experts.
The competition encourages students to discover and explore Qatar’s rich nature and learn more about the environmental diversity in the country through the app and website.
The Qatar e-Nature schools contest 2020 has become online and open to students in all schools and all grades, from grades 1-12. The previous editions included only primary schools.
The contest can be accessed via the Qatar e-Nature app or the website www.enature.qa/schoolscontest2020. Consisting of 10 questions multiple-choice quiz, the bilingual contest (Arabic-English) is based on information in the Qatar e-Nature app and website.
Questions cover various topics such as flora, birds, insects, reptiles, mammals, marine life, nature reserves and Qatar’s ecosystems. The contest will run until the end of March. Prizes will be awarded in April to winning students in each grade level as well as to the top five schools with the highest participation.
Fatima al-Obaidli, head of Programmes and Activities at the MoEHE said the contest is aimed at creating curiosity and awareness among the young about the environment and nature.
“This is in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the objectives of the ministry. We would like to thank Sasol for their dedication to help raise environmental awareness among the new generation that will lead the country to a better and healthier future,” she added.
Farhood al-Hajri, director Friends of the Environment Centre said that Qatar has a very diverse environment and many ecosystems.
“The Qatar e-Nature app and website offer precise information and educates about the richness and beauty of our nature and creates environmental awareness in the minds of the young. We thank Sasol for their efforts in updating the app and will continue to support the environmental endeavours,” al-Hajri said. Jack Saba, general manager of Public Affairs at Sasol Qatar said that with each passing year, the participation by the schools and students increase exponentially, proving the success of the initiative. The 2019 contest marked the participation of 113 primary schools. The Qatar e-Nature app is available for free download from Apple Store, Google Play store, and the website www.enature.qa
