DOHA: Qatar University (QU) has made a huge improvement in the Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings by advancing its position from 75 in 2017 to 35 in the 2018 rankings.

The inclusion of QU in the THE Emerging Economies University Rankings is a significant achievement, meaning it is one of the top 378 institutions in the 42 countries included in the ranking.

The THE Emerging Economies University Rankings include only institutions from the 50 countries classified as emerging economies (advanced and secondary) or “frontier economies” by the Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE). Hence QU’s place in this ranking of the best research-led universities in the developing world is a significant achievement.

The THE Emerging Economies University Rankings use the same 13 rigorous performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings, examining each university’s strengths against all of its core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

Commenting on this achievement, QU President Dr Hassan Al Derham said: “We are proud of QU being ranked 35th in Times Higher Education Emerging Economies University Rankings 2018.

This achievement proves that the economic improvement in Qatar is influencing education positively and was not affected by the blockade. It also highlights the university’s continuous advancement in its international and regional standing as it achieved 75th place in 2017 and 90th place in 2016.”

THE Editorial Director, Global Rankings, Phil Baty said: “A fantastic achievement for QU to make such a great leap up the new THE Emerging Economies University Rankings. A world-leading international outlook has supported big improvements in research influence. Congratulations.”
