Employment contracts of expat workers above the age of 60 will soon stop getting renewed, the decision has already been taken by the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs (MADLSA) and is expected to be implemented throughout the country soon, local Arabic daily Al Watan reported.

“After reaching the age of 60, the expat will have to leave the country for good, he would be paid all his dues”, the report says. The decision has reportedly been taken to imbibe young and energetic manpower into the country such that the country can continue its path of sustained development.

The decision has already been put to review and studies about its feasibility have been conducted and MADLSA is set to enforce the decision in both public as well as private sectors, the daily quoted sources.

Furthermore, a legal framework is being adopted to automatically terminate the work contract of expat workers once they reach the age of 60, all their dues will be cleared and they will be allowed to leave the country without any hassles.

Nevertheless, the decision is expected to include some provisions to determine the profession and nationalities that may be exempted from the rule.

In line with the recently issued human resources law, no company would be allowed to hire an expat if a Qatari alternative is registered at the MALDSA database. If a Qatari job seeker fulfils all the prerequisites for a job, the company must hire him and provide him with the necessary training needed to perform the job.

MADLSA is currently in the middle of preparing a comprehensive database, which will provide a real-time status of labour in the country. The database will provide information such as the size of the required labour force for the market compared to the available number of workers in the country, the report in Al Watan added.
