China slams US sanctions over Ukraine war
China called US sanctions on its entities over the Ukraine war “illegal and unilateral” and “not based on facts”, in comments on Tuesday ahead of White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan’s arrival in Beijing for days of high-level talks.

Last week the United States imposed sanctions on more than 400 entities and individuals for supporting Russia’s war effort in Ukraine, including Chinese companies that US officials say help Moscow skirt Western sanctions and build up its military.

Washington has repeatedly warned Beijing over its support for Russia’s defence industrial base and has already issued hundreds of sanctions aimed at curbing Moscow’s ability to exploit certain technologies for military purposes.

At least four more killed by overnight Russian strikes on Ukraine
Russia launched several waves of missile and drone attacks targeting scores of Ukrainian regions and killing at least four people, Ukraine’s military said early on Tuesday, a day after Moscow’s biggest air attack of the war on its neighbour.

Two people were killed when a hotel was “wiped out” in the central Ukraine city of Kryvyi Rih, regional officials said. Two died in drone attacks on the city of Zaporizhzhia, east of Kryvyi Rih.

Kyiv region’s air defence systems were deployed several times overnight to repel missiles and drones targeting the Ukrainian capital, the region’s military administration said on Telegram.

Reuters’ witnesses reported at least three rounds of explosions overnight in Kyiv.

Explosions heard in Kyiv, Reuters witnesses and local media report
Powerful explosions were heard in Kyiv early on Tuesday, Reuters witnesses and local media reported, with Ukraine’s air defence forces saying all of the country was under the threat of a Russian ballistic weapons attack.

It was not clear whether the explosions were air defence systems in operation or air weapons hitting their targets.

“Don’t ignore the air raid alerts, seek cover,” Ukraine’s air force said on the Telegram messaging app.

Biden condemns ‘outrageous’ Russian attack on Ukraine power grid
US President Joe Biden denounced an “outrageous” Russian assault on Ukraine’s power grid Monday, vowing Moscow would “never succeed” in its ongoing war and pledging continued support to Kyiv.

Russia fired hundreds of drones and missiles at Ukraine earlier Monday, killing at least four people and battering the country’s already weakened energy grid, officials there said.

“I condemn, in the strongest possible terms, Russia’s continued war against Ukraine and its efforts to plunge the Ukrainian people into darkness,” Biden said.

“Russia will never succeed in Ukraine, and the spirit of the Ukrainian people will never be broken.”

Biden speaks with Modi about Indian premier’s recent visit to Ukraine
President Joe Biden spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, days after the most prominent leader from a nation that maintains a neutral position on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine visited Kyiv.

Modi said in a post on X that he spoke to Biden about “India’s full support for early return of peace and stability” in Ukraine. He said the leaders also discussed India’s concern about the safety of Hindus and other religious minorities in neighbouring Bangladesh after this month’s ousting of the country’s long-serving prime minister.

The White House said Biden commended Modi’s engagement with Ukraine as well as his visit last week to Poland, one of Ukraine’s closest Eastern European allies.
