The old and archaeological areas and buildings in the center of Doha witnessed a radical change after the Public Works Authority “Ashghal”, represented by the Building Projects Department and under the umbrella of the Roads and Public Places Beautification Committee, in cooperation with the Ministry of Municipality, the Ministry of Culture and the Qatar Museums Authority, renovated and restored old neighborhoods and buildings in the center of Doha to preserve the buildings Qatari heritage, which highlights many aspects of the country’s history.

Al-Sharq monitored many completed buildings, in addition to the continuous work in full swing to finish the rest of the work, so that the old buildings in the center of Doha become a contemporary art painting with a heritage content that carries the fragrant Qatari history and a torch for future generations to follow their predecessors and follow their approach preserving the legacy of their homeland and their architectural identity. and patriotism.
Based on historical information and studies, the buildings that are being restored are those that were constructed between 1960 and 2012, as work was done to revive these buildings in a way that preserves the basic content without negatively affecting it.
The project is characterized by the fact that each region carries a different story and a special character from the history of Qatar, especially as it is located in the heart of Doha, which is pulsating with Qatari heritage and history, and how urban construction was affected based on the nature of living, to become the most important tourist elements that attract visitors from all over the world.
Al-Asmakh area
For example, the Al-Asmakh area, which includes 12 ancient buildings, along with the houses of the Al-Asmakh area, Sheikh Fahd’s Palace, Beit Al-Zaman, and Al-Najada Houses, where these houses were restructured and restored in the form of traditional Qatari houses, and work was done on structuring the mechanical works with the selection of colors in a very accurate way according to color In addition, wooden panels were used, which added the character of the ancient Qatari heritage to finally give a wonderful design mixed with the nobility of the past and the modernity of the present.

With regard to the Qatar National Library, which is considered one of the most important landmarks that have been renovated, especially as it is one of the oldest libraries in the Gulf countries, where this library was built in 1962 from one floor, and a second floor was added in the eighties, and the ancient library includes manuscripts and maps that exceed 1,200 Manuscripts in space science, mathematics, medicine and chemistry were written in Arabic, Persian and Turkish. The Building Projects Department worked to restore this library in the urban form that was built without any changes, with the addition of some elements of modern technology that enable the preservation of manuscripts and rare books and to select them carefully. The Public Works Authority “Ashghal” has completed the maintenance and renovation of building facades project in Area No. (7) “Old Markets Area”, which included maintenance and renovation of facades and installation of new signs, in addition to the construction of several other buildings in the markets area, taking into account the preservation of the design of the facades as It is without any change, with unifying shop signs in each of the markets, in addition to installing lighting units for the market facades, as the markets included Al-Jabr Market, Al-Asiri Market, Nasser Market, Faleh Market, Deira Market, Philippine Market, and Al-Badi Market, This is in addition to the old clinic, and several separate shops in the market area. The works also included structural maintenance work, such as paints, crack treatment, concealing exposed electrical wires, and replacing damaged doors and windows, as these markets are considered important to the citizens and residents of the State of Qatar, as they were the ideal destination for shopping in eighties and seventies of the last century.
It is worth noting that work on this project was carried out according to the highest environmental and international standards and according to the standards of the State of Qatar in construction, where the environment was preserved during work, and work was done to plant trees and decorate the area in terms of adding trees and nature.
