Mum fights for her life after family-of-five injured in horrific motorway crash are airlifted to hospital

A mum is fighting for her life after a whole family-of-five were airlifted to hospitals following a horrific motorway smash.

Shazia Khousar, 37, her husband Abid Nazir, 38 and their three children Qais 11, Bilal, nine, and one-year-old Haleema, were all “seriously injured” in a car crash on the M1 in Northants.

The family from Spotland in Rochdale had been travelling to visit relatives in High Wycombe and Luton on Friday when their Jeep Renegade collided with a lorry near Watford Gap services at around 9.45am.

The Manchester Evening News reports that they were all seriously injured and had to be airlifted to hospital.

This afternoon it emerged that Shazia is in critical condition at the University Hospital in Coventry.

She suffered a broken jaw and ribs, fractured leg, head injuries and internal bleeding and has been placed in an induced coma.

Abid’s condition meanwhile is said to be improving – after he regained consciousness this afternoon at the same hospital where he is now described as stable.

The three children were all taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Qais was discharged on Friday and Bilal and Haleema are expected to be discharged soon.

Bilal suffered a head injury but said to be doing well – while Haleema received a minor fracture to her left arm.

The couple’s eldest son Uzair, 15, was travelling abroad with family at the time of the crash, but has since returned to the UK.

Abid’s brother Majid said: “It’s extremely hard for the family and we are just keeping them all in our prayers.

“We got the first flight home with Uzair after hearing the news.

“He’s doing OK and the kids are all being cared for under the family umbrella.

“But we are now just waiting for Abid and Shazia to get better.”

Majid added his parents were in Pakistan and were applying for an emergency visa application so they can come to the UK to visit the family.

The motorway was shut for several hours while emergency services were on the scene.

Prayers and well wishes for the family have been shared on social media.

Northamptonshire Police said the family were all “seriously injured” – and are appealing for witnesses.
