Doha, December 09 (QNA) – Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has hosted 86 sporting events that were successfully organized by sports federations in the country in 2016, while Qatar managed two Olympic medals; one in high jump in the Rio Olympics and the other in shot put in the Paralympic Games.
In November, QOC hosted the general assembly of the Association of the National Olympic Committees (ANOC), which was held in the Middle East for the first time, and is considered the biggest sports conference for decision makers in the Olympic movement. The meeting took place in the presence of the president and members of the International Olympic Committee and the participation of 206 national Olympic committees.
This year saw the biggest ever Qatari participation in the Olympic Games when QOC President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani led a mission comprising 38 athletes representing ten federations, namely: athletics, handball, shooting, equestrian, boxing, beach volleyball, swimming, table tennis, judo and weight lifting.
One of the most significant Qatari achievements was Mutaz Barshim’s silver medal in high jump, which took Qatar’s Olympic medals toll to five in its Olympic history, besides ranking 69th in the Rio 2016 Games out of 207 participant nations. The ranking tops that of London 2012 by six places.
Qatar’s Olympic athletes are largely youngsters and have a great opportunity to prepare more and get ready to be involved in the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Qatar has also won a silver medal at the Paralympic Games, which were held in Rio de Janeiro with the participation of more than 4,300 athletes from 160 countries competing in 23 sports for 526 medals.
The medal, Qatar’s first in the history of Paralympic Games, came through Abdelrahman Abdelqader in the shot put competition as he achieved 11.15 meters on in the shotput F34 final.
QOC hosted two world championships; the UCI Road World Championships from October 9 to 16 and the World Bowling Single Championship from December 2 to 9. It will host a third world championship — the World Chess Rapid and Blitz Championships from December 26 to 30.
In January, Qatar hosted Al Rayyan International Show Jumping Championship, Qatar ExxonMobil Open for men’s tennis, the 30th Qatar Open Amateur Golf Championship, Qatar International Handball Tournament, the 19th Commercial Bank Qatar Masters in Golf.
Tour of Qatar for women and men took place in February along with Qatar International Sailing Championship, Aspire 2016 Qatar Junior and Cadet Open in table tennis, Qatar Total Open for women’s tennis, and HH the Emir’s Bowling Cup.In March, Doha hosted Qatar International Endurance Cup, Qatar Junior Squash Championship, Qatar Match Racing Cup for racing, the second Qatar International Taekwondo Open, the first tournament of the Qatar International Tennis Federation Junior Open, Qatar’s round of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour, the second tournament of the Qatar International Tennis Federation Junior Open, the 20th Qatar international table tennis tournament, the 9th Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup, and Qatar International Islamic Triathlon Championship 2016.

As for April, Doha hosted the international basketball championship, the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, the second Qatar ITF Future tennis tournament, the third Qatar ITF Future tennis tournament.

In May, Doha hosted the IAAF Diamond League and the World Nine-Ball Pool Championship took place in Doha in July.

Doha played host to the International Handball Federation’s Super Globe 2016 in September as well as the West Asian Women Handball Championship.

In October, Qatar hosted the 2016 FINA World Cup Series in swimming, the Gulf U-15 and U-19 squash tournaments and the UCI Road World Championships (Doha 2016).

In November, Qatar hosted the first GCC rowing championship in open waters, Qatar Classic squash tournament, the 49th military championship for shooting, Gulf tournament for juniors tennis, the 2016 IBSF World Snooker Championships, the Ladies European Tour 2016 in golf, and the fourth Qatar ITF Future tennis tournament.

As for December, Qatar staged the International Qatar Cup in weightlifting, Qatar Fencing Grand Prix for men and women and 16th Qatar Bowling Open, while the Qatar International Show Jumping Championship will be held from December 27 to 29.

On the Asian front, the calendar included the U-23 Asia Cup in football in January, the 2016 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in February, and the first and second Qatar Asian Junior Championships in March.

In April, Doha hosted the Asian qualifiers for West Asia rugby national teams, and the West Asian Women Handball Championship in September.

As well, Doha hosted a number of Gulf championships in 2016 as the Gulf ice hockey took place in January, the 12th GCC short course swimming championship in February, the 20th GCC golf championship for seniors and ninth championship for juniors as well as the Desert Cup tournament for ice hockey in March. The first Gulf handball tournament for junior females was staged in April.

In September, the 12th GCC artistic gymnastics for men was held, while the U-15 and U-19 Gulf squash tournaments took place in October.

The first GCC rowing championship was held in November, and the GCC cross country tournament will take place on December 23.
