Hamas demands ‘complete halt’ to war in response to Gaza truce plan

Summary:

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced $404 million in new US assistance for the Palestinians during a summit in Jordan aimed at boosting humanitarian aid for Gaza.
Blinken earlier met with key Israeli opposition figures on the second day of a visit to Israel, including Benny Gantz, the former army chief who quit Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s government on Sunday.
At least 37,164 Palestinians have been killed and 84,832 wounded in Israel’s war in Gaza, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry. Some 1,170 people were killed in the Hamas-led October 7 attacks and 250 people were taken hostage, with about 120 remaining in Gaza, according to Israeli tallies. Many have been declared dead by Israeli authorities.

The UN Security Council on Monday afternoon overwhelmingly approved a US resolution that welcomes a proposal for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken began his eighth visit to the Middle East region since the war began on Monday, meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi in Cairo. The planned tour includes stops in Israel, Jordan and Qatar.
The US military said it planned to stockpile aid shipments on a secure beach in Gaza during a UN pause on distributing food from the American-built pier after one of the deadliest days of the Israel-Hamas war.
Yemen’s Houthi rebels said they had arrested members of an “American-Israeli spy network” days after detaining at least 11 UN staffers along with others from aid organisations.
