Egypt: Sisi appoints new intelligence chief
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has appointed Major General Hassan Mahmoud Rashad as head of the General Intelligence Service, succeeding the outgoing head of the service, Abbas Kamel. Kamel has also been appointed as an advisor to the presidency.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi appointed Major General Hassan Mahmoud Rashad as head of the General Intelligence Service on Wednesday, succeeding the outgoing head of the service, Abbas Kamel, who was in turn appointed as an advisor to the presidency.

Rashad previously held the position of deputy head of the General Intelligence Service, where he managed important files, including improving relations between Egypt and Iran, according to what Reuters quoted from two security sources.

The agency notes that Sisi relied heavily on Kamel, who was a fixture in meetings with top foreign leaders and summits, and often took on foreign assignments as Egypt’s envoy.

Kamel was appointed head of the intelligence service in 2018, after assuming responsibility in military intelligence, as well as director of Sisi’s office.

Also, a statement by the Egyptian presidency indicated that Rashad and Kamel met with President Sisi, and Rashad took the oath before the president.
