The General Directorate of Traffic under the Ministry of Interior (MoI) launched the ‘Accident-free Summer’ campaign on Monday in order to raise awareness of traffic rules and safe driving practices among motorists while reducing traffic violations.
The MoI tweeted yesterday that the campaign began from the Qatifiyah area, highlighting the risks of using a mobile phone while driving as well as carrying out inspections to ensure motorists’ compliance with the traffic rules and
regulations.
On the first day of the campaign, awareness-raising tips were given to a number of motorists on traffic safety and the risks posed by improper habits during driving, especially using a mobile phone, were also
highlighted.
This year, the ‘Accident-free Summer’ drive focuses on direct awareness through the deployment of traffic patrols and is being implemented in co-operation with the Public Relations Department of the MoI, according to another tweet.
The campaign, aimed at curbing traffic violations and road accidents, will continue until August 1.
Earlier, announcing the campaign at a press conference last week, Col Mohamed Radhi al-Hajri, director, Traffic Awareness Department, said the initiative this year would focus on field awareness. Accordingly, awareness programmes and inspection campaigns will be carried out. The main goal of the campaign is to educate the public on the rules of traffic safety and safe driving, with a focus on motorists, especially youths, in the city of Doha and external areas, he noted.
The campaign will focus on raising awareness of various types of violations, including driving without a valid licence, passing through the right side, using the mobile phone while driving, parking in slots reserved for people with special needs and obstructing traffic by stopping in the yellow box.
The campaign will involve the distribution of awareness publications, such as brochures and leaflets, as well as offering guidance to motorists on different roads and commercial streets and in markets. This will be done within Doha and places beyond it, including Dukhan.
