‘Without US support, this attack would not have been possible’
Raed Jarrar, advocacy director at the US-based think tank DAWN, says the Israeli attacks on Iran would not have been possible without the Biden administration’s “blind military and political support” for Israel.
“In the past few weeks, we saw the US moving dozens of military assets to Israel, including the THAAD [missile defence] system,” Jarrar noted.
“For me, that is the most important part about the attack: the United States’s blind support that enabled Israel to continue its belligerence around the region,” he told Al Jazeera.
“Without US support, this attack would not have been possible.”

Israel attacks Iran: How we got here
Over the past hour, the Israeli military has confirmed it has launched strikes on military targets in Iran.
It comes weeks after an Iranian attack on Israel on October 1, when it launched nearly 200 ballistic missiles in response to Israel’s onslaught in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as the killing of senior Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, among others.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had said at the time the missiles were aimed at “vital military and security targets”.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Iran had “made a big mistake” and “will pay for it”, while Iran had vowed to respond to a potential attack in kind.
Regional tensions have been at an all-time high since Israel’s war on Gaza began more than a year ago, killing at least 42,847 people and wounding more than 100,000.

Here’s the full statement from National Security Council spokesman, Sean Savett:
“We understand that Israel is conducting targeted strikes against military targets in Iran as an exercise of self-defence and in response to Iran’s ballistic missile attack against Israel on October 1st. We would refer you to the Israeli government for more information on their operation.”
Citing unnamed officials, a reporter with FOX News said in a post on X just moments ago that the White House was “notified a short time” before Israel launched its strikes.
