UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing with Gaza on Friday to oversee preparations for the delivery of desperately needed international aid to the war-torn enclave. Guterres’s visit came after Israel said it would evacuate more than 20,000 residents from Kiryat Shmona, one of the biggest towns on its northern border with Lebanon following a heavy cross-border exchange of fire in the area the day before. Palestinians are awaiting a first delivery of desperately needed international emergency aid. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres paid a visit to the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing with Gaza on Friday to oversee preparations for the delivery of aid to the war-torn enclave. Near Egypt’s border with Gaza, food, medicines, water purifiers and blankets have been piling up, with doubts growing that the Rafah crossing will open as planned on Friday.
The Israeli army announced plans to evacuate the northern city of Kiryat Shmona, after days of clashes with Hezbollah fighters along the border with Lebanon.
The death toll in Gaza has risen to 4,137 since the Israeli bombardment began, the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry said Friday.
More than 1,400 people were killed in Israel during the October 7 Hamas attack, and more than 200 others were taken hostage. The Israeli army said Thursday that it had notified the families of 203 captives.
