A Criminal Court in Doha has sentenced an Asian expat to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for attempting to smuggle narcotic drugs into Qatar.
The expat was reportedly nabbed by law enforcement agencies at the international airport in Doha, a briefcase was recovered from his possession which was carrying 3 kilos of heroin. The man was arrested by anti-narcotic squad while he was waiting to board a flight and leave the country.
The court also imposed a fine of QR100, 000 on him and ordered his subsequent deportation upon serving his time.
It is worth mentioning that Qatar follows a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to dealing with people who indulge buying, selling, transporting, manufacturing or consuming narcotic drugs. Law No. 9 on Control and Regulation of Narcotic Drugs and Dangerous Psychotropic Substances (NDDPS) stipulates fines of up to QR500, 000 and even death sentences for repeat offenders.
