“In Qatar, the Palestinian flag can be seen everywhere, despite the Palestinian national team’s failure to qualify for the World Cup in football.” This is how the French Press Agency headlined its report on the interest of the Qatari and Arab public in highlighting the Palestinian issue in the first World Cup organized in an Arab country.
The French agency said that, on the other hand, the Israeli media finds it difficult to communicate with Arab fans on the ground, as many Arab fans are checking the identity of the stations that ask them to appear on their screens before agreeing to speak, refusing to give interviews to Israeli media.
At the end of the week, a Saudi fan near the Education City stadium in Doha refused to answer a question by the Israeli “Kan” channel reporter, Moav Vardi, and shouted in English, “There is no Israel, there is only Palestine,” and continued, “You are not welcome here.”
The report added: Qatari fans wave their country’s flags and Palestinian flags from their car windows, while the upbeat Palestinian song “Ali Al-Keffiyeh” is regularly broadcast in the fan zones. Qataris also wore a keffiyeh badge on their arms during the Germany-Japan match.
Palestinian Yahya Abu Hantash, 33, an employee in the medical sector, wearing a Qatar shirt and raising the Palestinian flag, said that the tournament “is an opportunity for us to introduce the world to our cause, especially since the world has become more interested in other issues.”
“Some foreigners do not know the Palestinian flag and ask us about it (…) and here comes our golden opportunity to introduce our cause,” said the father, who was with his son, who wore the Palestinian keffiyeh on their way to meet Brazil and Serbia, to the French Agency.
Palestinians see, according to the report, that the championship held for the first time in an Arab country is a truly golden opportunity to introduce the world to their cause.
“Palestine is not present in the tournament, but we make it present with the flag, the keffiyeh, and songs. It is absent,” said Palestinian fitness trainer Iman Al-Jarjawi, who put the flag of her country around her shoulders.
