These included violations of Law No 18 of 2017 on public hygiene, encroachment of State property and handling food products in unhygienic conditions — pertaining to Law No 8 of 1990 on the regulation of human food control, the statement noted.

The joint initiative aimed to eliminate the phenomenon of illegal street vending and the resultant violations of health and hygiene laws as well damage to the environment.

After the detection of violations, Al Sheehaniya Municipality cleaned the area of various types of waste materials in co-operation with the General Cleanliness Department.

Jaber Hassan al-Jaber, director of Al Sheehaniya Municipality, said the campaign was implemented following direct co-ordination with all the participating entities.

A work plan and mechanism was adopted to spot unlicensed street vendors and violations of the public hygiene law.

The official stressed that such campaigns would be carried out on a regular basis to eradicate illegal activities and deal with violations of the public hygiene law due to their negative impact on the environment and public health.

Further, he noted that such phenomena could be completely eradicated when violations are removed from various farms located in the area, which are the cause of such problems.

He added that around 70% of the violations on 10 farms in the municipality have been removed since the launch of the campaign in July.
