Future doctors were celebrated recently at the annual White Coat Ceremony of the College of Medicine, Qatar University (QU).
The College of Medicine, a member of QU Health, celebrated this significant milestone for its fourth year running, for 72 students who are expected to graduate in 2024.
Of this number, 21 are Qataris.
The ceremony was attended by vice-president for medical and health sciences and dean of the College of Medicine at Qatar University, Dr Egon Toft, along with a number of QU officials, faculty, students and staff members.
Consultant of metabolic, bariatric and robotic surgery at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Dr Jassim Fakhro, was the guest of honour at the event.
The ceremony aims to celebrate the transition of medical students from first year to second year.
The ceremony is specifically designed to emphasise the students’ commitment to the values of the medical profession and patient care, including integrity and ethical practices.
“Today, you will begin your journey in the College of Medicine’s rich tradition of excellence. This is the beginning of a new level of hard work in order to refine your passion and commitment to the medical and healthcare field,” Toft told the students.
He encouraged the students to set their goals to achieve their desired success and to keep contributing to Qatar’s vision in developing healthcare in the country.
Fakhro said: “I had previously wished that there would be a college of medicine in Qatar, where people like myself could study in our home country, near family and friends.
“However, our ambition to succeed pushed us to study abroad in order to specialise in the field of our choosing.”
“You are very lucky that you have this college,” he added. “Being near your family in your country is a huge motivator for success, and you will make your family and nation proud.”
