‘Islamic State’ abducts Christians in attack on villages in Syria
The “Islamic State” has kidnapped 90 Christians in northeastern Syria, according to a monitor. Earlier, at least four members of an Assyrian-Christian militia were killed during an IS attack on their village.
IS abducted 90 Christians, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Tuesday. According to the Observatory, the abductions took place after dawn raids in villages inhabited by the ancient Assyrian-Christian minority – which makes up about 5 percent of the country’s population – near the town of Tel Tmar in the western countryside close to Hasaka, a city mainly held by Kurds.
The attack follows a report on Monday, in which the Observatory cited “reliable sources” who said IS had kidnapped 56 Assyrians in the village of Tal Shamiram. “The sources confirmed that they heard via wireless devices IS members saying that they detained ’56 crusaders’,” the Observatory had reported.
