Israel-Ireland tensions continue over Irish PM’s social media post

Diplomatic tension between Israel and Ireland has resurfaced following a social media post by Irish premier Leo Varadkar, which prompted fierce criticism from Israel’s foreign minister.

Varadkar posted about the release of Israeli-Irish dual national Emily Hand, who turned 9 while being held hostage in the Gaza Strip.

“This is a day of enormous joy and relief for Emily Hand and her family. An innocent child who was lost has now been found and returned, and we breathe a massive sigh of relief. Our prayers have been answered,” the Irish Taoiseach (prime minister) wrote on X.

The post prompted a rebuke from Israel’s Foreign Minister Eli Cohen on Sunday, who accused Varadkar of having lost his “moral compass” and “connection to reality”.

“Amelie Hand is not lost, maybe you have lost your moral compass and your connection to reality,” Cohen wrote in a fierce post on the social media platform. “Amelie Hand was kidnapped by a terrorist organisation worse than Islamic State after her stepmother was murdered. Amelie and over 30 other Israeli children were kidnapped by Hamas, and you are trying to legitimise it. Shame on you!”

‘Bittersweet moment for Israel’ after tense hostage standoff

The tense cease-fire between Israel and Hamas appeared to be back on track early Sunday after the release of a second group of militant-held hostages and Palestinians from Israeli prisons, but the swap followed an hourslong delay that underscored the truce’s fragility.

ABC correspondent Jordana Miller reports for FRANCE 24 from Jerusalem.

Six Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in West Bank, Palestinian officials say

Six Palestinians, including one minor, were shot dead by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank late Saturday and early Sunday, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

Five of the deaths occurred in the city of Jenin and the sixth was in Yatma, a village near Nablus city. Six others were injured during the shooting in Jenin, the ministry said.

The Israeli military spokesperson’s office said it was checking the reports.

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA said Israeli forces stormed Jenin “from several directions, firing bullets and surrounding government hospitals and the headquarters of the Red Crescent Society”.

Families and children kidnapped from Israel’s southern Kibbutz Beeri were among the 13 Israeli hostages released by Hamas on Saturday, according to accounts given to AFP by their relatives, Israeli press, and the Hostage Families Forum.

A group of 13 Israeli hostages were also freed on Friday under the agreement, which is supposed to last four days and allow for 50 Israelis and 150 Palestinians to be freed.

Israel released 39 Palestinian prisoners on Friday, and a further 39 on Saturday night.

Welcome to our live coverage of the third day of a tense truce between Hamas and Israel.

The Islamist militant group is set Sunday to release a third group of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, a day after freeing captives including a young woman snatched from a desert rave.

In a sign of the fragility of the exchanges, the latest swap Saturday was delayed for hours after Hamas accused Israel of breaching its side of the deal that led to a four-day ceasefire in the seven-week-old war.

About casualty figures from Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry:
Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, the largest in the enclave, receives data from every hospital in the strip. Hospital administrators say they keep records of every wounded person occupying a bed and every body arriving at a morgue. The ministry also collects from other sources including the Palestinian Red Crescent.

The health ministry does not report how Palestinians were killed, whether from Israeli airstrikes and artillery barrages or errant Palestinian rocket fire. It describes all casualties as victims of “Israeli aggression”. The ministry also does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

Throughout four wars and numerous skirmishes between Israel and Hamas, UN agencies have cited the Hamas-run health ministry’s death tolls in regular reports. The International Committee of the Red Cross and Palestinian Red Crescent also use the numbers.

In the aftermath of war, the UN humanitarian office has published final death tolls based on its own research into medical records. The UN’s counts have largely been consistent with the Gaza health ministry’s, with small discrepancies.
