(MENAFN) Lebanon has protected “American guarantees” that its maritime border agreement with Israel cannot be easily argued should Benjamin Netanyahu go back to the Israeli premiership, Beirut’s top negotiator stated Wednesday.
Israel and Lebanon hit a US-brokered sea border deal in October that opens up lucrative offshore gas fields for the neighbors that stay technically at conflict.
Hawkish previous Israeli premier Netanyahu, who on Wednesday appeared on the cusp of going back to power, has staunchly opposed the agreement, rejecting it as an “illegal ploy” and cautioning he would not be bound by its terms.
“We obtained sufficient American guarantees that this deal cannot easily be canceled,” on the words of Lebanon’s speaker Elias Bou Saab, who is as well deputy parliament spokesperson.
If Netanyahu wants to leave the agreement, then “he will withdraw from an agreement with the US,” Bou Saab informed AFP, saying that Israel and Lebanon had inked separate agreements with the United States.
He added Washington had cautioned that “the withdrawal of any party would have great consequences on both countries.”
“When Netanyahu says that he wants to withdraw, this means that he will be facing the international community,” Bou Saab also said.
Netanyahu, who has described the agreement as a “capitulation agreement,” has not remarked on it since Tuesday’s Israeli votes.
