The Australian embassy in Qatar announced that ambassador Jonathan Muir has taken up his position.
Ambassador Muir presented his credentials to His Highness the Deputy Amir Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad al-Thani yesterday, according to a statement.
“My focus over the next few years is on growing the already strong economic relationship between our two countries,” the envoy said.
“Our two-way trade was around QR4.5bn in 2018 and the Qatar Investment Authority is a valued source of foreign direct investment in Australia – but there is plenty of room for growth.”
“Qatar Airways now operates daily flights to five Australian cities, providing excellent opportunities to develop deeper trade, investment, and people-to-people links.”
“I am proud of the reputation Australia enjoys in Qatar as a supplier of high-quality meat and livestock. I look forward to finding opportunities to grow our agricultural trade further.”
“In particular, Australian expertise in dryland farming can help build Qatar’s agricultural sector and food security. I also see strong opportunity for collaboration in science and technology research.”
“Several thousand Australians live in Qatar – working in diverse fields such as health, education, construction and oil and gas – contributing to Qatar’s dynamic economy.”
“I am excited to arrive as Qatar gets ready for the FIFA World Cup, when it will welcome the world – including many Australians. I wish Qatar well in its preparations, which are already well advanced.”

Ambassador Muir is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently Director, People Smuggling and Human Trafficking Taskforce.
Ambassador Muir previously served overseas at the Australian embassy in Jakarta. He is married and has three children.
