Qatar inflation rises 1.4% in June on high education cost

Doha – Qatar’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 1.4 percent in June this year over that of the same month last year with education sector contributing the highest increase of 11 percent, the Ministry of Development Planning & Statistics (MDPS) said on Sunday.

A comparison of the CPI in June this year with the same month in 2014 shows that the price surge is a result primarily of the increasing costs in groups like ‘education’ which was up by 11.1 percent and ‘tobacco’ which witnessed an increase of 6.3 percent.

The rise in ‘transport’ cost by 2.7 percent and ‘clothing and footwear’ by 2.6 percent also played a role in lifting the index. Other groups like ‘housing, water, electricity and gas’ and ‘furniture and household equipment’ rose 1.8 percent and 1.1 percent respectively.
