Over a dozen migrants have drowned off the coast of Turkey while trying to cross the Aegean Sea to get to Greece. A number of refugees have been rescued by Turkish coastguards.

Local officials said at least 18 migrants drowned off the Turkish coastline on Sunday. Rescue guards, backed up by three boats and one helicopter, were searching for more survivors. Their nationalities are not known as yet.

The tragedy occurred one day before EU leaders and Turkey are set to meet to discuss solutions to the refugee crisis. Turkey is a major crossing point for refugees from the Middle East wanting to come to Europe.
