South and North Korea to hold talks to defuse tensions

South and North Korea have agreed to hold talks at the border village of Panmunjom as Pyongyang’s attack deadline looms. Earlier, South Korea said its troops were ready to defend the country if the North chose to attack.

According to South Korea’s presidential office, the meeting between the top officials of the two hostile countries would take place Saturday afternoon (09:00 UTC), 30 minutes after a deadline set by Pyongyang for Seoul to dismantle loudspeakers broadcasting anti-North Korean propaganda.

The South’s national security adviser Kim Kwan-jin and unification minister Hong Yong-pyo will engage in talks with the top political officer for the North Korean People’s Army (KPA) at the Panmunjom truce village.
