Two Sudanese parties agreed yesterday that normalization with Israel is not part of the tasks and powers of the transitional government, but rather within the competence of the elected government. This came in a joint statement issued by the National Umma Party headed by Sadiq al-Mahdi and the Popular Congress (founded by the late Hassan Al-Turabi).

The statement added, “The two parties agreed that the issue of normalizing relations with Israel is of the core competence of the elected government, and not one of the tasks and powers of the transitional government.”

On Tuesday, the Sudanese Prime Minister, Abdullah Hamdok, in response to the request of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, to normalize relations between Khartoum and Tel Aviv, said that his transitional government “does not have a mandate regarding the decision to normalize relations with Israel” as it is a government that is running a transitional phase that is supposed to end in the year 2022 elections will result in a government that can look into the matter.
