Syrian refugees now in Toronto look forward to ‘beautiful future’

Shadi Mardelli said he’s looking forward to a “beautiful future” in Canada after arriving in Toronto late Thursday along with more than 160 other refugees who have fled the civil war in Syria.

Mardelli expressed gratitude and told CBC News he is “very happy” he has arrived. He spent almost an entire day in transit, on the first government aircraft carrying refugees as the Canadian government works to fulfil a pledge of bringing in 25,000 refugees by the end of February.

“Now in Canada, I can’t imagine my feelings,” he said. “I am so happy, thank you very much. I am looking for safety, a beautiful future and a new future.”
