World’s first male genitalia transplant patient to be a father

The girlfriend of the world’s first penile transplant patient is pregnant, reported the News24 online this week.
According to the News24, Professor Andre Van Der Merwe, a Stellenbosch University urologist, declared the news on Thursday in a public lecture, after the patient notified the head of the university’s Division of Urology.
“The organ is functioning,” the professor told News24, confirming a successful surgery.
The South African patient had to undergo the transplant last year in Tygerberg Hospital, after he lost his male genitalia due to a failed circumcision.
