USGS: Magnitude 7.5 earthquake strikes Afghanistan

At least 18 people died when a powerful earthquake struck northern Afghanistan on Monday, with tremors being felt in India and Pakistan.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter of the quake was in the far northern province of Badakhshan, which borders Tajikistan and China. The USGC downgraded the earthquake from magnitude 7.7 to magnitude 7.5.

People in Afghan capital Kabul, India’s capital New Delhi and Pakistan’s capital Islamabad reported feeling strong tremors. In Islamabad, walls swayed and people poured out of office buildings in a panic, reciting verses from the Quran, the Associated Press reported.
