7 Anti-Cancer Foods for Life!

According to statistics in the USA one in every two men will get cancer while the figures for women are one in three. Twenty one percent will die of this devastating illness. Further, the World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that in 2035 there will be a staggering 24 million with cancer globally.

-This reflects the need for a major shake-up on how we approach cancer.

In spite of the overwhelming scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of good nutrition in cancer prevention, orthodox medicine has generally given this scant attention. However, in more recent times there is a growing recognition by conventional doctors, not only on cancer but also with other diseases that food can be used for both preventative and medicinal purposes.

So, for prevention and reversal here are my top 7 anti-cancer foods. I strongly recommend getting into the habit of eating these wonderful foods if you haven’t already.

1. Turmeric

It’s the spice that gives curry a yellow colour and has been known for 1000’s of years in India for its medicinal properties. Many recent studies have confirmed turmeric’s potential for cancer prevention. Curcumin in turmeric and its derivatives have shown to be powerful safe options in the treatment of cancers. It inhibits the proliferation (rapid growth) of cancer cells while helping to maintain normal healthy cell function.

2. Dark leafy greens such as kale

Dark leafy greens such as kale are rich in carotenoids responsible for giving that vibrant green appearance. Carotenoids also give other vibrant colours in other foods… Kale has very high vitamin content (vitamins C, A, B6, K and minerals such as calcium and iron… ) with anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-microbial properties. Kale’s anti-cancer abilities have been said to come from beta-carotene, lutein and other carotenoids, quercetin, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, selenium, kaempferol, indole-3-carbinol (I3C), 3,3′-diindolylmethane (DIM) and certain isothiocyanates, sinigrin and also glucosinolate from hydrolysis…

3. Almonds

Besides having properties that fight constipation, promote efficient mineral absorption, aid digestion and reduce bad gut bacteria, bitter almonds are vitamin B-17 rich making them an excellent anti-cancer food. Vitamin B-17 interferes with the cancer cell’s metabolic pathway by destroying an enzyme beta-glycosidase, killing the cancer cell.

4. Apricots

While we’re on the subject, apricots are rich in B-17 and in particular the natural form of this vitamin contained in the seeds called amygdalin. Don’t believe in the misinformation telling you that this is ineffective. It has excellent anti-cancer properties for prevention and reversal. As part of a metabolic nutritional therapy regimen, apricot seeds or kernels are widely used with other things to fight cancer effectively.

5. Blackberries

Another great food source, containing potent anti-cancer compounds is blackberries. Other berries, having similar properties, such as strawberry, raspberry and blueberries are also anti-cancerous. In the late 1980’s work done by Professor Gary Stoner et al found that berries contained a compound high in ellagic acid having tumour reducing properties. With a combination of other compounds such as folic acid and phytochemicals… today berries have recognised by many as part of an armoury for cancer prevention and reversal.

6. Garlic

Garlic has been highly praised in the cancer fighting strategy. Research has shown that garlic contains allicin, having anti-cancerous properties… Garlic quite rightly has been a highly recommended food and is a powerful antioxidant. Affectionately nick-named the ‘stinking rose’ because of its smelly sulphur compounds. However, these sulphur compounds contribute to the many health benefits.

7. Broccoli

Broccoli is one of a number of the cruciferous ‘family’ vegetables (cauliflower, cress and cabbage… ) that has cancer fighting properties. According to Jed Fahey of Michigan University broccoli is the only one with a compound called sulforaphane having properties that enhance our body’s protective enzymes and flush away carcinogenic chemicals. Broccoli has been known to reduce lung, skin, stomach, breast, prostrate and liver cancers.

Conclusion

Consistent with the Hippocrates saying “Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food” these are some of the most powerful anticancer foods, either greatly underestimated or ignored by mainstream medicine. Indeed, the more you can incorporate these into your diet by habit or seizing the opportunity… the better.
