On Wednesday, the German government led by Olaf Scholz presented a bill aimed at easing restrictions on obtaining visas and work permits for citizens of non-EU countries, in a move that will benefit refugees.
According to the Al-Jazeera website, it will not be necessary to present a work contract to settle in the country, as this will be replaced by a points system that measures the candidates’ “abilities” to integrate into society, similar to what is currently being applied in Canada.

Observers believe that the aim of this step is to attract more specialized labor needed by the German economy, but it sets Berlin against the general trend in Europe to close the borders to immigrants.
“We will make sure to bring into the country the specialized workers that our economy has urgently needed for years,” Home Secretary Nancy Feather said when introducing the bill, which still needs to be passed by lawmakers.
She said the new system would “remove bureaucratic hurdles” and “allow specialized workers to quickly come to Germany and start” at work.
The shortage of specialized workers has become a real problem in Germany, where the authorities count two million vacancies currently, while the generation of the sixties is retiring.
Due to an aging population, the labor market is expected to lose 7 million people by 2035, if the government does not take any steps, according to a study by the Labor Market Research Institute.
