Ed Carpenter not injured in scary Indianapolis 500 practice crash

INDIANAPOLIS – Two-time defending Indianapolis 500 pole-winner Ed Carpenter was unhurt in a violent crash during a pre-qualifying morning practice on Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Carpenter’s No. 20 Chevrolet appeared to lose control out of Turn 2 and flipped over and tumbled after striking the outside wall SAFER Barrier. He skidded to a stop at the end of a debris field. Carpenter was out of the car quickly and furiously threw his helmet inside an awaiting ambulance after walking to it.

It was the third similar event of the week for a Chevrolet, as Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves went airborne after a Turn 1 crash into the wall on Wednesday and Carpenter’s teammate at CFH Racing, Josef Newgarden, did the same on Thursday. Castroneves’ car came to rest on its tires while Newgarden’s landed top-down. Neither was injured.
