Struggling giants Al Rayyan saw their winless run extend to the Qatar Cup on Sunday after defending champions Lekhwiya thumped the Qatar Stars League champions 3-1 to secure a successive place in the final of the Qatar Cup.

Youssef Msakni scored the opener with a stunning header, typical of Robin van Persie’s extraordinary header in the 2014 World Cup match against Spain. Lekhwiya’s second goal came from the boot of Muhammed Muntari, who dribbled past Oumary Barry to pump the ball into an empty net. If you think Lekhwiya’s two goals were just perfect, then the third from South Korean Tae Hee Nam was equally brilliant.

Rayyan, in the end, managed to score a consolation goal but from the hand of Victor Caceras which went unnoticed by referee Khamis Mohammed al Kuwari.

Al Rayyan’s hopes of snapping a five-match winless streak suffered a damaging turn at the Al Sadd Stadium. They fell apart in the second half to a disciplined and attacking Lekhwiya team.
