A man has been charged after a video circulated online showing an Uber driver in the back of a vehicle with a woman.

Mohammed Jamal, 37, of Shaw, Oldham has been charged with an offence of soliciting.

Greater Manchester Police said the charge relates to an alleged incident involving an adult female in a vehicle in Rochdale in the early hours of Sunday 9 April.

Jamal has been bailed ahead of an appearance at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court on 4 May.

He said: “We understand the interest this case will have generated but it is absolutely imperative that the suspect has a fair trial so members of the public must refrain from engaging in conversations online, at least until proceedings have concluded.”

Uber said it had banned the driver while it investigated the footage.

“We have banned the driver while we investigate and are working directly with the police,” a spokesperson for the company said.
