German legend Matthaus supports Qatar World Cup in winter
Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has said that holding the 2022 World Cup in the winter will be good for the players and fans, according to a report on the ESPN.
World governing body FIFA has already confirmed that the tournament in Qatar will take place in November and December to avoid the fierce heat of June and July.
Matthaus, who played in five World Cups and won the 1990 tournament with West Germany, said that doing so would make for an enjoyable competition.
“Having the tournament in winter is great from the point of view of fans and players – after all, it is not exactly going to be snowing in Qatar in June,” the Bundesliga ambassador said in Singapore.
“Personally, when I played Morocco in the second round game of the 1986 World Cup in Mexico at Monterrey, the temperature was almost 50 degrees. It was a late afternoon kickoff and I have no idea how we played.
