The Ministry of Municipality and Environment’s (MME) agricultural quarantine offices inspected 7,070 imported shipments, weighing more than 147,000 tonnes, of various agricultural products in May.
The officials destroyed 92 consignments, weighing more than 72 tonnes, as they contained damaged products or products that violate the Agricultural Quarantine Law.
The agricultural quarantine is a first line of defence to protect the country’s agricultural wealth from foreign-origin pests. The Agricultural Quarantine Law stipulates that all plants and agricultural products imported to the country should be subjected to phytosanitary regulations to ensure their conformity to the conditions and specifications.
