The text of the following statement was issued by the governments of the State of Qatar and the United States of America on the occasion of the sixth Qatari-American Strategic Dialogue.

His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, and His Excellency Mr. Anthony Blinken, Secretary of State of the United States of America, chaired the sixth Qatari-American Strategic Dialogue, which was held on March 5, 2024 in Washington, DC. The topics covered in this year’s dialogue highlighted the breadth and depth of the relationship between the State of Qatar and the United States, which has lasted 50 years, from economic and security cooperation to emerging technology and strengthening ties between cities and communities between the two countries. Both Qatar and the United States announced many new achievements. This includes amending the bilateral defense cooperation agreement, a memorandum of cooperation on the exchange of biometric data to enhance law enforcement and cooperation in combating terrorism, and a memorandum of understanding on the opening of the first “American Corner” in Qatar since 2014. The dialogue devoted a session that focused on the organization, events and legacy of the FIFA World Cup. Football 2022, which took place in Qatar, on the occasion of the transfer of the championship flag from Qatar to North America before the 2026 World Cup.

Global cooperation

Qatari and US officials discussed key priorities, which included Venezuela, Gaza, Afghanistan, global humanitarian aid and development, the Horn of Africa, Yemen and Ukraine. Secretary Blinken expressed his deep appreciation for Qatar’s continued leadership in the region, including important mediation efforts to facilitate humanitarian aid to civilians in the Gaza Strip and secure the release of hostages, including American citizens, held by Hamas. Qatari and US officials also discussed the challenges in Afghanistan and the exceptional teamwork between the two countries on Qatar’s temporary hosting of thousands of qualified individuals from Afghanistan and their resettlement to the United States.
