NHRC Qatar hosts human rights conference, The two-day Regional Conference on the role of the High Commissioner in the protection of human rights in the Arab region got under way today in the presence of HE Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Also present at the launch of the event was HE the Foreign Minister Dr Khalid Al Attiyah and several other high level government dignitaries. The event started a whole hour behind schedule with an address by the Chairman of Qatar’s National Human Right Committee, Dr Ali Bin Samikh Al Marri who spoke about the notable and unprecedented decline in human rights in the Arab region – from Palestine to Syria and Yemen. He said this conference, with is being attended by over 230 government organisations and international and local entities, would pave the way to better understanding the role of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in helping alleviate some of these situations and also developing mechanisms to uphold human rights in the region.

Along with the call to reassess the Arab human rights movement, he also spoke about the integration of women and youth into the process, in addition to including the voices of victims and marginalised communities. Finally, he hoped that the Arabic language would be given higher prominence at the OHCHR, with more of the organisation’s publications and its website supporting it.
