First post-Morsi parliamentary vote opens in Egypt

Voters in Egypt’s parliamentary election are expected to mostly endorse candidates who support President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi. But critics think the turnout will be lackluster due to the absence of any real opposition.

Voting got underway at 9am local time (0700 GMT) on Sunday, in the first parliamentary election since the previous assembly was dissolved in June 2012 in the midst of the country’s four-year political crisis.

The poll to elect the 596 member lower House of Representatives, which has been delayed several times, is being staged in two phases between October 17 and December 2.
