Qatar inks pact with France to buy 24 Rafale warplanes

Qatar and France on Monday signed an agreement for the purchase of 24 Rafale fighter jets for Qatar. The Emir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani and French President Francois Hollande oversaw the signing of the agreement at the Emiri Diwan, where they also held official talks.

The two countries also signed an agreement for cooperation in the organisation of FIFA World Cup matches in 2022.

A joint communique issued by Qatar and France reconfirmed their interest in promoting ties in defence and security. Hollande’s visit, it says, has given a “new push for relations between the two countries”, particularly in defence and security, besides tourism, due to the exemption of Qatari citizens from Shengen visa. Qatar and France intend to develop a partnership to enhance the capability of Qatari army.
