The “Unity Wave” initiative launched by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy last March concluded the Zero Waste Festival, which continued for three days at the Doha Festival City complex with the aim of raising awareness among community members about waste reduction.
The festival, which was held in cooperation with the Torba Farmers Market, shed light on the amount of waste generated by the activities of community members on a daily basis, and its negative effects on the environment, while providing advice and guidance on ways to reduce waste by organizing many interactive displays and activities, to enhance the awareness of individuals and encourage them to do more. Commitment to adopting practices that maintain a healthy and sound environment for future generations.
Engineer Bodour Al Meer, Director of Sustainability Department at the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, stressed the keenness of the organizers of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar to launch sustainability initiatives and programs over many years, during which they have made great strides, saying: “Despite the important steps we have achieved in this field, We still have to do more to build a sustainable society in Qatar, and we seek to encourage sustainable behaviors and practices across the country.”
She added, “We now have an ideal opportunity to enhance our achievements in the field of sustainability, and to highlight our commitment to reducing the impact of hosting the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 on the environment, with the world’s attention directed towards our country, coinciding with the approaching date of the historic tournament,” expressing her happiness in cooperating with Torba Market for Farmers in this pioneering project, which allows the public to benefit from simple and practical advice, and which shows the ways they can take to contribute to a greater role in preserving the environment in their daily lives.
This event comes months before the wider Zero Waste Festival, scheduled for next November, with the start of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
The festival featured a pavilion made of recycled wood and wood industry waste, and the events included three main areas, including the “green axis”, which formed a platform for environmentally friendly local companies to display their products and services aimed at reducing waste.
The festival also included a “Nature Zone”, which was designated as a play area for children, where they had the opportunity to interact with materials and elements found in the natural environment, and participate in workshops to encourage them to learn sustainable behaviors, in addition to providing a sustainable and environmentally friendly shopping experience for adults through a retail store. used products.
The Zero Waste Festival is part of the Supreme Committee’s efforts to launch a broader program of events with the aim of raising awareness and urging individuals to take steps to bring about positive change in Qatari society, in an effort to reduce the harmful effects of waste on the environment.
The Torba Farmer’s Market will present the “Green Guide”, which will include the best sustainable community initiatives in Qatar, in addition to a list of leading local companies in adopting practices aimed at protecting and preserving the environment, including providing the best recycling services.
The efforts of the “Unity Wave” initiative to raise environmental awareness and interact with individuals and institutions in Qatar continue throughout this year, in conjunction with the ongoing preparations to host the first edition of the World Cup in the Arab world and the Middle East.
The initiative publishes regular updates on its social media accounts, addressing its projects to reduce the use of plastic materials, and highlighting the damages of plastic waste to marine life and oceans around the world.
