The Taliban have banned women in Afghanistan from attending medical and semi-professional education, including nursing and midwifery.
This will not only shut the door to the last remaining avenue for education in Afghanistan but will also have devastating consequences for the health of women in the country that has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world.
The Taliban must immediately end the system of gender persecution and fulfil Afghanistan’s obligations under international human rights law.
