UVA President Jim Ryan said Monday that one was in good condition and one in critical condition.

Suspect in custody after massive manhunt
The university’s emergency management team issued an alert Sunday night, notifying students about an “active attacker firearm” and asking everyone to take shelter where they were.

The shooting took place around 10:30 p.m. (0330 GMT) at a parking garage at the campus, which is located in Charlottesville.

The campus was then locked down while helicopters and police searched for Christopher Darrell J., the student who was suspected of the shooting and has now been taken into custody.

UVA police chief Timothy Longo said in a press conference that he could not add details with “respect to how he was apprehended,” referring to the 22-year-old suspect.

The shelter-in-place order was lifted Monday morning, 12 hours after it was first issued. All classes were also canceled Monday.

The students on the bus were returning from seeing a play in Washington, D.C, about 181 miles (291 kilometers) from Charlottesville, associated with their class on Sunday.

‘Traumatic’ incident for everyone
UVA President Jim Ryan said Monday morning that all three victims of the shooting were identified as members of the university football team.

Ryan said in a letter to students that the shooting was a “traumatic incident for everyone in our community.”

The suspect, also a former UVA football player, is listed on the University’s athletic website as a running back.

He faces three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of using a handgun in the commission of a felony.

Federal and state prosecutors will assist local agencies with the investigation, they said in a joint statement on Monday.

In 2007, Virginia Tech became the scene of the worst school shooting on record in the US when a 23-year-old student killed 32 students and faculty members before committing suicide.
